• What is a mat?

  A mat is a tangle of hair or fur that can be small or large, found on pets not brushed regularly. When left on the pet, it collects hair, dirt, skin oil, and grows tighter, pulling at skin and causing discomfort. The skin underneath cannot breathe, retaining moisture and bacteria, leading to raw spots, abscesses, fleas, mold, and maggots.

• How often should my pet's nails be trimmed?

  Most dogs and cats should have nails trimmed monthly. If too long and touching ground, shrinking back is required. Long nails twist toes, causing discomfort and pain, potentially leading to early arthritis. Cats require trimming every 4-6 weeks. If nails are too long, weekly or bi-weekly trimming is needed to shrink them to healthy length.

• What is "quicking" the nail?

  Quicking is trimming a nail to the point of making it bleed. Inside nails are blood vessels and nerves. For clear nails, the vessel is more easily seen. For black nails, it's hidden and quicking happens more easily. Minor quicking can be stopped with styptic powder, flour, or soap. Severe quicking requires vet visit.

• How often should I brush my pet?

  Depends on hair type. Short-haired dogs may need brushing once weekly; thick undercoat dogs need several times weekly. Dogs requiring continual trimming need daily brushing and combing of every inch to prevent mats. Use comb to reach skin level where mats form. Mats form quickest where friction occurs: ears, face, armpits, belly, inner thighs.
