Frequently asked questions
-
Can you groom multiple dogs in one appointment?
Yes. Each dog is groomed individually and completely before the next begins, so every dog gets the same one-on-one attention and care. The van is fully cleaned and sanitized between each dog. Back-to-back same-household grooms are one of the most popular ways busy households use Porchlight.
-
How does mobile grooming save time compared to a salon?
With Porchlight, the groomer comes to you. No driving, no waiting rooms, no coordinating your schedule around a pickup call. For households with multiple dogs, the time savings are even greater since everything is handled in one visit.
-
Do I need to be home the whole time?
No. An adult must be available at the start and end of every appointment to hand off your dog and receive them when done. In between, you're free to go about your day. As long as you're reachable by phone, you're good.
-
Can I book recurring appointments?
Yes. Porchlight's online booking lets you schedule at your convenience, selecting the day and time that works for you without waiting for a callback. The easiest way to keep grooming off your mental load is to book your next appointment as your current one wraps up.
-
Will I get the same groomer every time?
Yes, always. Porchlight is owner-operated, which means the same groomer handles every appointment. No rotating staff, no handoffs. Detailed notes are kept from every appointment and a grooming report is sent after each visit.
-
How do you keep track of my dog's preferences?
Every dog has a profile that travels with them from appointment to appointment. Before the first visit, questions are asked about history and preferences. During the groom, notes are taken on what worked and what didn't. By the second or third appointment, the groomer knows your dog's name, quirks, and favorite spots.
-
What makes Porchlight different from a grooming franchise or chain?
At a franchise, you're a booking in a queue with rotating staff. At Porchlight, you work with the owner directly every time. The owner lives in the same neighborhoods served, knows your block and dog, and is reachable by text, not a call center. Pricing is generally comparable to a salon, but the experience is categorically different.
-
Are you insured and certified?
Yes, fully. Porchlight is insured through Travelers Insurance. The groomer holds a Certified Professional Groom Tech credential from the Paragon School of Pet Grooming and Pet CPR & First Aid certification through CPR Seattle, current through 2028. Continuing education through Paragon and AKC certification programs is ongoing.
-
Is mobile grooming better for anxious dogs?
For most anxious dogs, yes. Traditional salons are busy, loud environments with unfamiliar smells, other dogs, and multiple handlers. At Porchlight, your dog is groomed in a quiet, private van parked outside your home with no other animals, no waiting, no crate time, and no handoffs. Work is done at the dog's pace.
-
How do you groom a dog that hates being groomed?
Carefully, and on their terms. A complimentary Meet & Greet is offered where the dog can explore the van at their own pace before any grooming begins. Cooperative grooming techniques are used that follow the dog's lead, with breaks when needed. Some dogs need a few visits before fully relaxing.
-
Can you groom a reactive dog safely?
Yes. Reactivity is almost always triggered by environment, other dogs, unfamiliar handlers, confinement, or feeling rushed. Porchlight eliminates most triggers by design. Your dog is the only animal in the van, there's no crate time, no waiting room, and no rotating staff. Work is one-on-one at the dog's pace.
-
What happens at a first mobile grooming appointment?
When you book, information is collected about your dog's breed, coat type, temperament, and past grooming history. The groomer texts when on the way and upon arrival. For first-time clients, a complimentary Meet & Greet is included before grooming begins.
